Projects as Part of Laptop Orchestra (MUSC419)
Water (Feb 2021)
Took part in the creation of a game world using the Unity engine, centered around the theme of water. The player triggers the playback of individual "voices" through interacting with objects in the world, creating a growing ensemble in the process.
Personally brainstormed the foundation and concepts, designed all of the soundtracks in this piece.
Programmer: Chase Bernath
Instrumentalist: Samuel Schlegel
Flight - Laputa (Apr 2021)
Another game world using the Unity engine, centered around the theme of flight. The player, whilst controlling an airplane, flies through a series of different terrain reflected by respective soundscapes.
Designed all of the audio in this piece, whilst triggering the clips for the final soundscape during the live performance. All audio is diegetic and change properties (loudness, direction) depending on the position of the player in the game world.
Programmer: Ciaran De Groot
Graphics: Emily Chen
Touch (Apr 2022)
As a group, a combination of lighting, choreography, and audio-visual processing was used to portray the theme of "touch". Inspired by Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan.
Directed the lighting components of the piece, using DMX lighting equipment and motion tracking of the dancers on stage, implemented through MaxMSP programming (see introduction video below).
Piano: Jessica Peng
Choreography: Brandi Laine, Michelle Khoo
Visuals: Shu Wang
Performed at Roy Barnett Recital Hall at UBC School of Music
Diminished Days (Dec 2021)
The first Laptop Orchestra Project after resumption of in-person classes. Using thematic elements to portray the sensation of quarantine/lockdown during the pandemic, and the irreversible changes brought to our way of life.
Responsible for audio, collection and manipulation of sound clips to accompany the visual and choreography
Piano: Ji Young Kim
Visuals: Ploykarn Kunkonlakarn
Choreography: Michelle Khoo
Performed at Roy Barnett Recital Hall at UBC School of Music
Reflections in Wonderland (Dec 2021)
Assigned theme for this piece was "reflections". Combined with elements from the animated classic Alice in Wonderland (1951). Programmed all the stage lighting accompaniment. Changes in lighting corresponds to the movement of the dancer. Implemented via XBOX Kinect motion tracking and MaxMSP
Visuals: Taylor Vosper
Audio: Ploykarn Kunkonlakarn
Choreography: Brandi Laine
Performed at Roy Barnett Recital Hall at UBC School of Music
Sol Burn (Mar 2022)
Interactive piece with audio and video triggering and processing. Max/MSP, Unity, Kinect Controlled Artistic Sensing System (Kicass)
In the initial state of the game world, there are numerous "sun" objects, represented by a collage of Shuriken particle systems, ravaging the burning environment.
As the piece progresses, the dancer's movements is tracked by the Kicass system, which in turn sends a signal for the suns to be successively "shot down" with an explosion as soon as dancer makes a certain pose. The in-game environment changes as more suns are downed.
Personally responsible for the creation of the entire Unity world, from designing all particle systems to scripting the behavior of all in game objects, in order to portray the theme of "Sol Burn". Narrative inspired by the Chinese mythology of Houyi and the Ten Suns
Choreography: Kendra Baldwin
Music: Jessica Peng
Performed at ICICS Recording Studio at UBC (only Laptop Orchestra piece performed outside of Roy Barnett Recital Hall)
Projects as Part of Electroacoustics & Computer Music (MUSC319-320)
Spooky Music Box
(MUSC 320 Project using MAX MSP)
Luminescent
(MUSC 319 Final)
Created soundscape through audio manipulation. All elements recorded using voice and everyday household items.
